Since the publication of Rolf Hochhuth's drama The Vicar, the charges against Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli) have never ceased. He is alleged to have been silent about the crimes of National Socialism and Fascism. Was Pacelli 'Hitler's pope'?
In February 2003, the Catholic Church declassified documents in the Vatican Archives dealing with the relations of the Vatican to National Socialism. In this book, the authors have used these materials to shed new light on the troubled relations of the Holy See and Hitler's Germany; as well as broadening their scope to cover the Vatican's stance towards other European dictatorships of that time, such as Fascist Italy, Franquist Spain, Salazar's Portugal, and the Dollfuss regime in Austria.
