Mein Zweck bei der Abfassung des „bronn war, eine Zusammen fassung dessen zu liefern, was gegenwärtig über die Schwämme bekannt ist; mein Hauptaugenmerk war dabei stets auf das System gerichtet. Trotzdem das Buch eine Compilation ist, so wird man doch manches Neue darin finden. Absichtlich bin ich aber mit dem Neuen smrsam gewesen und habe das Alte nur in so weit geändert, wie es nach den jetzigen Auffassungen nothwendig erschien. Die unvermeidliche Folge hiervon, nämlich eine gewisse Inconsequenz, macht sich leider dadurch 1'ublbar; ich bin mir dessen sehr bewusst, wie ich auch nur allzu gut die zahlreichen Fehler und Mängel kenne, „but I trust that those who are most capable of detecting them will also be most charitable in exon sing them (balfour Embryology I). Ich werde mich glücklich achten, wenn das Buch Anderen die Arbeit erleichtert und vor allem es ihnen ermöglicht, irgend einen Schwamm mit einiger Sicherheit generisch zu erkennen. Was allerdings bisher für einen Nicht - Specialisten auch bei vieler Mühe und Zeit kaum möglich war.
