The existence of the Canary Islands seems to have been forgotten until their rediscovery in the fourteenth century by a French vessel which was wrecked on their coast, at which time they were peopled by a warlike race, brave, chivalrous, gallant, and generous to an extreme. They scorned to attack an unarmed foe, or to injure women or children, and esteemed treach ery and falsehood as the greatest of crimes.
