Comme eux, il eut l'imagination romanesque, le c ur tendre, l'ame desarmee contre les seductions de la vie: il courut les aventures; il fut acteur, auteur, dragon; il ecrivit des comedies trop gaies et des romans licencieux; il reedita les pires plaisanteries de Voltaire a l'adresse de la religion; il eut du reste une detestable reputation qu'il ne merita qu'a moitie: car il etait brave homme, et il finit en grand-pere delicieux. Victor Augier, d'Orange, sous des dehors pleins de feu, cachait Lin esprit net et pratique: ce meridional, ami du plaisir et de la galejade, etait un raisonneur, un juriste; il lutina la Muse, mais il epousa Themis, comme on disait alors, c'est-a-dire il fut avocat et meme avocat de talent. Ces deux hommes se rencontrerent: ils etaient naturellement portes l'un vers l'autre: le joyeux Picard ne se sentait point depayse en descendant vers le Midi, et le Provencal avise ne demandait qu'a remonter vers le Nord. Victor Augier devint le gendre de Pigault. Inquiete pour ses opinions liberales au debut de la Restauration, il se fixa a Valence, ou il demeura quelques annees.
