La prima di queste Cronache - che furono pubblicate durante il 1919 nella Illustrazione Italiana - dice al lettore che cosa esse vogliano essere: delle cronache, appunto, dei riassunti della vita teatrale italiana; e, s'intende, del teatro drammatico.
Nello scriverle, durante l'anno, non ò mai pensato che ognuna di esse potesse aver vita per più di otto giorni, quanti ne à il periodico settimanale che le pubblica. Ma alla fine dell'anno il mio Editore, ch'è un uomo intelligente, esperto, che conosce il suo mestiere, mi à detto che queste Cronache potevano essere raccolte, ogni anno, in volume, e che troverebbero dei nuovi lettori. Perchè, in esse, è, appunto, una storia aneddotica della produzione e delle vicende teatrali dell'annata; e c'è chi può trovarci gusto a leggerla tutta di seguito, e può trovarci interesse.
