But if the steepness of the southern Alpine slope is a con stant menace to the plain, the torrential nature of its rivers has not only made the plain, but endowed it with its wealth of soil. The rivers themselves afford a curious proof of the way in which they have created the rich pianura. All of them, the Po, Ticino, Adda, Oglio, Mincio, Adige, Brenta, up to the Piave, when they impinge upon the level lands after leav ing the mountains, assume an eastward trend. The reason is that the gravel and boulders which they bring down from the mountains have gradually raised a mound at the point where they debouch upon the plain, and this mound compels the rivers to turn eastward in their effort to reach the sea. Thus the plain itself, too, has been forced eastward by the deposit brought down by the rivers the sea has slowly receded, and towns like Ravenna and Adria, that once were on the Adriatic, are now many miles from its shore.
