Excerpt from The Suitors: Comedy in Three Acts
Some extracts from the following pages, including the Trial of the Dog, were originally published in a series of papers in the Albany Law Journal, on Law and Lawyers in Literature. As I then wrote, I was not aware of any trans lation of this comedy into English. Shortly after, I received from levi bishop, Esq., of the Detroit Bar, a literal prose translation of the comedy, published by him in 186 This suggested to me the idea of translating the entire play into English verse. I confess my obligations to Mr. Bishop's spirited rendering, and to some valuable hints derived from correspondence with him.
I have endeavored to make the translation as literal as possible; and have adopted verse, not on account of any poetical merit to be claimed for my verse, but because I thought it would enhance the absurdity and extravagance of the situations.
