It was under these influences that the author began this book, among the places and people which it attempts to describe. The scenery is presented as true to nature as her feeble pen could portray it. Some of the characters are drawn from life, and many of the incidents are actual occurrences. This, then, is the author's explanatory apology, who also appends this proposition: "All things being equal," would not the "gentle reader" subject to these same conditions have been guilty of a like offence?
