And now-behold him kneeling there By the child's side, in humble prayer, While the same sunbeam shines upon ‚ The guilty and the guiltless one. Moons. THERE are moments when, to the sensitive heart, a gloom of indifference seems to have fallen upon every surrounding object and veils its joys, and removes far, far away_ those happy scenes of the past. It is then we think the earth is a dreary world of sin and sorrow. The thoughts of its scenes and pleasures become distasteful, and we turn away with chilled feelings from outward objects, and seek relief only within ourselves. Yet earth's scenes have not lost their charms. There are many of them which Angels, doubtless, behold with delight, and which awaken emotions of joy among the dwellers far within the ethereal abodes. Of this number surely are those which display the deep love of pure hearts; the force of truth upon darkened minds; and the power of innocence to soften hard and cruel spirits, and move them to gentleness and penitential regrets. A scene of this nature is presented in the engraving. With delightful emotions the heavenly spectator views the silent influence of the innocence of childhood upon the cruel, crafty, and bloody warrior of Eastern climes. Those stern, dark, and rigid features relax, and then soften, displaying the innate sympathy of the spirit of that fierce man with the delighted joys of childhood which once were his.
