From his boyhood dreams of playing professional baseball to his rise as one of the most powerful men in Illinois, Jesse White has been a model of opportunity, compassion and excellence.Along the way he has saved countless young peoples' lives and perhaps even their souls. When they call him Mister White, they do so with a reverence reserved for a war hero. Says baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Banks: “Even though Jesse White didn't make it to the major leagues, he was always a great inspiration to me throughout his career.” Says U.S. Senator Dick Durbin: “Jesse White is almost mythical in terms of his reputation ... he teaches the kids from the toughest streets in Chicago to do good things with their lives.” In a war against intolerance, poverty and ignorance, Jesse White has earned the title of Mister. Moreover, in an era when the term has tended to be overused, Jesse White has earned the right to be called an American Hero.

About the Author:
While growing up on the south side of Chicago, Rick Davis shared one of Jesse White's dreams while growing up on the south side of Chicago. “As a kid I never wanted to be anything but a baseball player,” Davis remembers. “And I took it as far as I could. But the time comes when, like it or not, every little kid has to grow up. Fortunately, about the same time I figured out I wasn't very good at turning the double play, I learned that I was pretty good at turning a phrase.” As author of They Call Heroes Mister: The Jesse White Story, Davis worked at turning an incredible life story into enjoyable prose. The Jesse White Story is Davis' second published book. He is the author of the first authorized biography of former Chicago Bulls star Bob Love (Butterbean: When Glory's Just a Whisper). Coincidentally, both biographies study the lives of men who lived in the South during some of this nation's most trying times.
