Synopsis:
This volume features 100 selected treasures from the National Library of Ireland. It won the Best Single Arts Sponsorship Award for 1994 in Ireland. Among the selections are: a 12th-century Latin deed by Dermont MacMurrough; the oldest surviving volume of bardic poetry; the coats of arms of Cromwelian officers; the proclamation issued in 1789 by the French expeditionary force at Killala; a self-portrait by John Butler Yeats; and Patrick Pearse's surrender document from 1916. These treasures from the National Library of Ireland are drawn from over 1000 years of history, and represent many strands of human endeavour and cultural achievement. They come from four corners of Ireland, from Britain and continental Europe, the United States and Australia. To provide a representative sample of the selections, a certain number have been chosen from each of the main collections. While facilitating the selection process, this classified approach enables the items to be presented in context, and to some extent the book may serve as a general guide to the holdings of the National library. This book includes printed books, official publications, posters, broadsides, ballads, newspapers, as well as prints and drawings, photographs, orignial manuscripts, Gaelic manuscripts and maps.
