Used in its time as a Palace, Royal Mint, menagerie and prison, the Tower of London still commands the river as it has done since the Norman Conquest. To the east of the Tower is St Katherine's Dock, opened in 1828, the ancient St Katherine's Hospital built in 1148 being demolished to make way for it. Inland and along the river lies London's East End - Wapping, Stepney, Whitechapel and Bethnal Green - each borough with a long history of its own. Peopled first of all by workers from the farms of Essex and Suffolk drawn by the City's industry, and later by silk workers from France and immigrants from Russia, Poland and Germany, all were thriving communities. This volume also covers parts of the City: Bishopsgate, the old trade route from East Anglia, and Cornhill, Gracechurch Street and Fenchurch Street.
