About the Author:
Theodor Fontane (1819-98)lived much of his life in Berlin, first as a journalist (covering the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71), and turning to the writing of fiction at the age of 58. He is the author of 17 novels and novellas, six of them set in Berlin.
