Still another book on the War IT he exclamation is perhaps natural, and as it has become the custom to apologise for the appearance of each work, one must say something in excuse for his production The only real excuse is that the subject was very interesting, and when the campaign ceased one grudged to burn the notes made during its progress. Some of those who were actors in the play, and could only be present in their own scenes, might wish to know what friends had done. Others, who at home had no opportunity of making notes, might perchance wish to know where some regiment they were interested in had been employed. To afford such information in a brief and an easily accessible form is the object of this book. It makes no pretence of being a history of the doings of each unit. Such a history would occupy a library of volumes. Rather is it a sort of enlarged directory to show where a particular regiment or battery added to or mayhap lost some of its reputation. It cannot even pretend to record where all regiments were employed.

Book Description Hardcover in Dustjacket. Condition: Fine / Fine. MILITARY GENERALSuperior Fine Copy!First published 1903. pp. xiv, 532 #081222Grenadier Guards, Territorial Regiments, Cavalry, Royal artillery, Royal Engineers, etc.The Second Boer War , 11 October 1899 â" 31 May 1902, also known as the Boer War was fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics over the Empireâs influence in Southern Africa. Following the discovery of gold deposits in the Boer republics, there was a large influx of âforeignersâ, mostly British from the Cape Colony. They were not permitted to have a vote, and were regarded as âunwelcome visitorsâ, invaders, and they protested to the British authorities in the Cape. Negotiations failed, and in the opening stages of the war the Boers launched successful attacks against British outposts, before being pushed back by imperial reinforcements. Though the British swiftly occupied the Boer republics, numerous Boers refused to accept defeat and engaged in guerrilla warfare. Eventually, British scorched earth policies brought the remaining Boer guerillas to the negotiating table, ending the war. Many consider the Boer War as marking the beginning of the questioning of the British Empireâs veneer of impenetrable global dominance; this is due to the warâs surprisingly long duration and the unforeseen, discouraging losses suffered by the British fighting the âcobbled-together armyâ of Boers.
