The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. ## ## Cornwall - Cornwall's long rugged peninsula at the far south-west tip of England is almost cut off from the rest of the country by the natural boundary of the River Tamar. The waters of the Gulf Stream bring a generally mild climate, but the rocky coast must endure the wrath of Atlantic gales. The windswept interior gives way to high granite moors, and only the sheltered valleys provide havens for more luxuriant growth. The granite land of West Penwith is perhaps the most evocative of the Celtic west and has attracted many artists and writers. Traditional occupations have been farming, fishing and metal mining, while tourism provides an ever important, if seasonal, income. The county is renowned for its striking coastal scenery which includes Land's End and Lizard Point, the most westerly and southerly places in England. Resorts such as Newquay have developed around fine beaches, but there are many picturesque fishing coves and villages.
