Originally published in Mixico in 1957, "The Role of the Americas in History" explores the meaning of the history of the Americas in relation to universal history. Zea endeavors to reveal the relationships that exist between the particular history of Latin America and the history that has been and is being made by other peoples. An unusual feature of Zea's analysis is that Iberia does not form part of Western consciousness. Aez discusses the problems and conflicts of the Iberian and Western worlds as they pertain to the New World where they combined to become the legacy inherited by Latin America and North America. Amy A. Oliver's introduction provides an overview of such major themes in Zea's thought as marginality, humanism, Catholicism and Protestantism, philosophy of history, and liberation.
