Anderson Imbert, Enrique. The Other Side of the Mirror: El Grimorio. Authorized Translation and Introduction by Isabel Reade. Foreword by J. Cary Davis. Continental Edition. Carbondale and Edwardsville / London and Amsterdam, Southern Illinois University Press / Feffer and Simons, Inc., 1973. 13.5 x 21cm. (13), 226 pages. Original softcover with endpapers. Spine sunned, otherwise excellent condition. [Contemporary Latin American Classics, General Editor: J. Cary Davis]. In his work, Enrique Anderson-Anderson fought for a renewal of the Argentinian literary landscape, moving away from 19th century realism to favor fantasy, intellectual depth, and a richer, more flexible language. In 1934 he published Vigilia (A Vigil), his first novel, and three years later La flecha en el aire (The Arrow in the Air), a collection of essays. Fascinated by the theory and techniques of the short story, his early literary output was enough to establish him as one of the founding fathers of the so-called "magic realism" which was later followed by Miguel Angel Asturias, Alejo Carpentier, and Gabriel García Márquez, the famous stars of the Spanish American boom. In 1956 The Other Side of the Mirror appeared, his first book of short stories translated into English. In 1965 Enrique Anderson-Imbert was appointed as the first Victor S. Thomas Professor of Hispanic Literature at Harvard University, a move that heralded the flourishing of the study of Iberoamerican literature in U. S. universities. [Harvard Gazette]

Product Description:

Although Enrique Anderson Imbert is little known in this country, he is recognized in Latin America as a writer of great talent. This collection of his short stories, translated from his El grimorio, is a blend of the fantastic and the real. Isabel Reade has translated the book to share the imaginative, often nonrealistic, philosophical, or poetic stories with all readers, but the book is of special consequence to aficionados of Latin American writing and to persons interested in experiments with techniques and themes in literature.

About the Author:

Isabel Reade studied with Anderson at the University of Michigan, where she received an M.A. degree in Hispanic Literature.

Enrique Anderson Imbert is now Victor S. Thomas Professor of Hispanic-American Literature at Harvard University.
