Explaining the genesis of my book Doing Archaeology.
My name is John Currid. I am the author of the book Doing Archaeology in the Land of the Bible. My interest in archaeology began when I was a college student (although my mother claims it began in a sandbox back in the 1950's). In 1972 I travelled to Israel and excavated at the site of Tell Qasile, under the direction of Ami Mazar of Hebrew University. I caught the fever! Since that initial stint as a volunteer, I have served on the staffs of numerous excavations in the Middle East: these include Tell el-Hesi, Carthage, Bethsaida, and Lahav (where I directed the Agricultural Project). In my spare time, I earned a Ph.D. in archaeology from the University of Chicago. In all my travels, I noticed a gaping need, that is, a book that would explain to students how archaeology works. I take many students on digs, and a basic guide about archaeology I thought would be very helpful. Thus, I wrote this book. Thank you for your interest in this book, and I hope you enjoy it.

John D. Currid (PhD, Oriental Institute, University of Chicago) is Carl W. McMurray Professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary. He has served on several archaeological excavations and is author of Ancient Egypt and the Old Testament.
