WHAT'S THE RUSH? uses running as a metaphor for all the rushing about everyone is doing in response to the speedup of change. Its 30 'Recipes for the Sole'(mind-changing strategies for inducing the sensation of 'being run' rather than doing the running) were developed over decades of my own running. Each of them can be used either in exercising (such as walking, running or treadmilling) or indeed anywhere and in any routine activity. For example, imagine 'breathing yourself forward' through a harrying set of tasks, or letting an invisible towrope pull you through a difficult meeting, or using the 'just-to-there' strategy (agreeing with yourself to run only to a land mark up ahead, and then quit--then, as you approach the mark, pick out another and doing the same thing) to work your way through a difficult long-term project.
You can use another of my favorite Recipes as you're reading this. It's ca lled Remembering Now. You know how it is when, after a certain experience is over, you're able in hindsight to see what it meant? Go now to a future yourself and look back on this moment as if it's a memory. Imagine saying to yourself, "How could I have known that that event would lead to that other thing, or reading, or conversation that followed, and that I would find myself here as a result?"
Remembering Now is one of the strategies listed in WHAT'S THE RUSH? under Noetic Principle No. 3, Playing With Time. These mental activities allow you to work on your sense of time (that resource which so many find to be scarce)so that, whatever you are doing--even if it's for a moment--your experience is that your have all the time in the world to do it.
It's my sincere hope that WHAT'S THE RUSH? will reach many people who are harried and driven in this world of change, so they can use its ideas to do what the subtitle says: Step Out of the Race...Free Your Mind...Change Your Life.
