The spine is tight, and the inside is immaculate. ## ## Dorset - Of all the English counties, Dorset must be one of the most rural, and herein lies much of its charm. The landscape is superb and varied with chalk downs, vales, and heaths. There are the distinct regions of the 'Isles' of Portland and Purbeck, while the coastline includes famous features such as the Chesil Beach, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. The rocks and fossils of the area are likewise well known. It was into this landscape that prehistoric people settled and farmed, leaving a legacy of field monuments, many of national importance. This book provides a selection of these, together with other sites of a later date, historic buildings and gardens open to the public. Towns and villages are also described, and country churches. Museums of all sizes with collections of local and sometimes national importance, ranging from dinosaurs to tanks, are detailed. Dorset is the heart of the 'Wessex' of Thomas Hardy, and places associated with his books are briefly described. The printing is much clearer on better quality paper, which will mean longevity in the years to come. Newer subjects and updated earlier Shire publications made it an exciting step forward. ## ### Shire Publications are a series of books that have grown from 32, 64 pages and more depending on the subject. Retaining and expanding the numbering system used by the old album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library.
