Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Ardizzone, Edward (illustrator). Small 8vo. Hardcover. Pp. 197. First Hardcover Edition, published in paperback in 1966, itself a re-illustrated edition from the original 1937 book. Illustrated by Edward Ardizzone. In very good condition; brown cloth binding with gilt title on the spine. Slight shelf-wear to boards, with light stains and marks on front and back. Spine has some bumping at top and bottom. Small tears and marks on the inside of the dust-jacket, which has light scuffs and creases. Pages themselves are clean and unmarked with light foxing. Previous owner's bookplate on front end-paper. The Land of Green Ginger is a 1937 book for children by Noel Langley. The book was originally illustrated by the author, though in 1966, it was re-illustrated with Edward Ardizzone's now classic illustrations. It tells the story of Abu Ali, the son of Aladdin (who is now emperor of China). Abu Ali's first words are "Button-nosed tortoise", which immediately mark him out as fated to perform an important task when he grows up. On reaching maturity, Abu Ali duly sets out on his quest, having various adventures, and struggling to do good whilst foiling the schemes of the Wicked Princes, Rubdub Ben Thud and Tintac Ping Foo. Edward Ardizzone, who sometimes signed his work "DIZ", was an English painter, print-maker and war artist, and the author and illustrator of books, many of them for children. For Tim All Alone, which he wrote and illustrated, Ardizzone won the inaugural Kate Greenaway Medal from the Library Association for the year's best children's book illustration by a British subject.
