About the Author:

Novelist, poet and essayist, Jose Sarney (Maranhao, Brazil, 1930) is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. His first novel, 'O Dono do Mar' ('Master fo the Sea') has been translated into English, French, Arabic, Greek, and Romanian. Sarney was president of Brazil from 1985-1990 and is currently a member of the Brazilian Senate.

During the end of the nineteenth century both Brazil and France claimed the territory between the rivers Oiapoque and Araguari, today the Brazilian state of Amapa. It is an immense region of unknown rivers and mysterious forests, with waterfalls along great rivers that run south to the Amazon or east to the Atlantic Ocean. After gold was discovered in the legendary Calcoene River, prospectors, swindlers, heroes and drifters rushed to the region.
