About the Author:

Ian Blumer, M.D., is a diabetes specialist with a community practice in the Durham region of Ontario. He has a teaching appointment as a medical associate with Mount Sinai Hospital (part of the University of Toronto) and is actively involved in diabetes research. An enthusiastic lecturer, he has spoken about diabetes to numerous professional and lay audiences and has appeared regularly in the Canadian media; most recently as the health expert on TV1 in Toronto. He is a member of the Clinical and Scientific Section of the Canadian Diabetes Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes. Ian is the author of What Your Doctor Really Thinks (Dundurn, 1999) and the medical advisor for the recently published Everything Diabetes Book (Adams Media, 2003). His popular Web site www.ianblumer.com offers practical advice on how to manage diabetes.
Ian is married to a rheumatologist and has three children, the eldest of which, to Ian’s astonishment, is now old enough that she is attending university. In his spare time, Ian can be found skiing down mogul runs and battling wind and waves during a sailing race. One day he hopes to emulate lucky Vancouverites who get to do both on the same day, though not necessarily at the same time.

Alan L. Rubin, M.D., is a professional member of the American Diabetes Association and the Endocrine Society and has been in private practice specializing in diabetes and thyroid disease for more than 28 years. Dr. Rubin was Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California Medical Center in San Francisco for 20 years. He has spoken about diabetes to professional medical audiences and non–medical audiences around the world. He has been a consultant to many pharmaceutical companies and companies that make diabetes products.
