The Prince is the sixteenth century political treatise by the political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. While it is typically considered the pinnacle of his thesis on politics, it was published posthumously. It gained instant recognition in its day, partly because it was published in Italian rather than the traditional Latin, a practice gaining in popularity at the time. The Prince is generally considered the first work of modern political philosophy, and has given birth to the term Machiacellian, generally a pejorative for deceit and duplicity. Odin’s Library Classics is dedicated to bringing the world the best of humankind’s literature from throughout the ages. Carefully selected, each work is unabridged from classic works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or drama.

Review:
Parks is not only a very good novelist indeed, but he has been translating works from Italian for 20-odd years now, so no one is going to doubt his competence as either an Italianist or writer of stylish English...So this is actually a gripping work, and a gripping translation
-- Nicholas Lezard, The Guardian, Saturday 27 June 2009
About the Author:
Niccolò Machiavelli was born in Florence in 1469 of an old citizen family. In 1498 he was appointed secretary and a second chancellor to the Florentine Republic. During his time of office he accompanied Julius II on his first campaign of conquest. In 1507, as chancellor of the newly appointed Nove di Milizia, he organised an infantry force which fought at the capture of Pisa in 1509. Three years later it was defeated by the Holy League at Prato, the Medici returned to Florence, and Machiavelli was excluded from public life. He retired to his farm near San Casciano, where he gave his time to study and writing. After a brief return to public life, he died in 1527.
