This volume pays homage to the cuisines of the places where hot weather is a way of life. Recipes are themed with summery flair: fish and shellfish are "Seaside Specials"; barbecue dishes are "Too Hot to Handle"; and for something more exotic, use the "Go On Your Hols" section.

Review:
This attractively boisterous book demonstrates what the Nosh Brothers are so good at. Summer Nosh is a collection positively zinging with vibrant flavours, in recipes inspired by cuisines from around the world. (In some cases, not so much inspired as shamelessly stolen.) The sort of cooking aimed at is a "more time to lie around on the grass drinking sort of cooking" and the Brothers hit this target again and again. Sections dealing with Picnics and Barbecues take the pain out of these often fraught occasions with recipes like Electric Soup--basically little more than a (very) large Bloody Mary--Tuna in Orange and Chilli Marinade, and Lamb Koftes with Walnuts and Roast Chilli Dressing. Naturally, since this is summer food, and drink in some form or other is expected to accompany it, many of the recipes are Australian, Mediterranean or Pacific Rim in origin or inspiration. The Brothers' version of Greek salad includes grilled rib-eye of lamb along with the usual feta cheese, tomatoes etc. They add pineapple to their Coleslaw and they put tequila into its mayonnaise dressing. Their Moussaka returns the dish to its Ottoman origins, with cinnamon and yoghurt in the sauce. Among the desserts, Caramelised Mangoes and Papaya with Gin and Tonic Ice Cream stands out, if only for its sheer audacity (though it sounds delicious). This is an excellent guide for anyone who wants to add colour and spice to their cooking this summer. --Robin Davidson
