En 1637, les jésuites construisaient un collège a Québec, et cinq ans après, dans la même ville, les ursulines ouvraient la première école de filles dans la nouvelle-france Ces deux institutions furent les premières qui, alors qu'il n'était pas encore question d'écoles normales, donnèrent, dès 1836, des cours pédagogiques pour préparer les jeunes filles à l'enseignement. Vingt ans plus tard, en 1857, quand les écoles normales furent instituées, c'est aux ursulines de Québec que furent confiées les élèves de la division des filles.
