Je n'ai pas eu la prétention de faire un livre qui dure je dis ce qui est, j'essaye de faire entrevoir ce qui sera; mais étroitement limitée dans le cercle des faits et des prévisions de l'é poque où elle est écrite, mon oeuvre ne saurait avoir qu'une valeur actuelle, et le livre même de _m. De Ponthoz m'aurait appris au besoin qu'on ne peut guère en faire d'autres quandjl s'agit du Brésil. Avec le rapide développement que prend i'mpire, ce qui est aujourd'hui sera modifié demain, et certainement, dans moins de dix ans, mon livre sera à refaire, car les faits et les chiffres qu'il donne seront tout aussi suran nés alors que le sont en ce moment les faits et les chiffres recueillis en 1845 par M. De Ponthoz. Il n'y a qu'une chose qui ne change pas au Brésil c'est l'ardeur du gouvernement impérial à Créér ce qui manque et à améliorer ce qui est.
