Llamada al cabo por la ley a ejercer la gobernacion de la república procura Isabel II pagar tan preciosa deuda, mereciendo el envidiado titulo de Madre de los españoles, y recoge Madrid las primicias de su carino, no esquivando Isabel esfuerzo alguno para llevar a cabo la obra del engrandecimiento de la Villa y Corte, que derribados sus antiguos mu ros, se derrama por llanos, valles y colinas, compitiendo, al ensanchar sus límites, con las primeras metrópolis de Europa.
