Voici ce que M Soldan fait observer à cet égard: pour étudier la question de la saint-barthélemy, il est indispensable, non-seulement d'appuyer la combinaison des faits sur les documents eux-mêmes et d'en montrer la succession chronolo gique, mais aussi d'avoir égard à ce qui a été écrit sur la matière, afin de rectifier des erreurs assez gé néralement accréditées et, autant que possible, d'en indiquer l'origine. C'est ce qui a été fait dans les notes; on voudra bien ne pas voir une vaine parade d'érudition, dans ce qui n'est qu'un moyen de fournir nos preuves et d'en faciliter au lecteur la vérification. Il ne suffisait pas de donner nosrésultats dans le texte, il fallait aussi en montrer la source et les jus tifier.
