Pietro Colletta nacque in Napoli di onorata famiglia a' 23 di gennaio l'anno 1775. Educato agli studi, attese con molto ardore a quei delle matematiche, non trascuro gli altri; e presto facendo suo ciò che gli somministra vano le scuole, imparò assai bene il latino, credo per amore di Tacito. L' idea del bello scrivere glis'impresse modellata su quella solennità romana che tanto all' in gegno gli si confaceva. Ma sentire ed - Operare fu bisogno incessante di tutta la vita sua; a scrivere non pensava allora: l' animo bollente, il corpo fortissimo, e un pre sentimento giovanile d'ambizione lo trassero alla milizia, alla quale s' ascrisse, nel 1796, cadetto d' artiglieria.
