This book is a story about how ducks, geese and swans live. 'these birds, the wildfowl, have always been very special to me-because of their wildness, the long flights so many of them make to breeding grounds in the far north, their musical calls and the great beauty of their feathers when you can get close enough to see them. Before the Second World War, I used to keep some tame ones at my lighthouse home on an East coast salt-marsh. After the war I wanted to make it possible for other people to enjoy seeing them close to. I wanted to share my excitement and enjoyment of them so I set up a centre at Slimbridge where there was already a flock of wild white-fronted Geese. The small collection of tame birds soon grew into the largest collection of different kinds of ducks, geese and swans in the world-more than 160 different kinds. Now we have six other centres open to the public in England and Scotland.
