This book is a hymn of praise and lament rolled into one, and the object of its worship is that marvellous vessel, the Thames sailing barge. Hervey Benham wrote it as the last few barges carrying cargo under sail alone - Cambria, Mirosa - were ploughing up and down the coast. The whole book is beautifully and evocatively written. Both the history of the Thames barge and the way of life that went with them are carefully and lovingly recorded. Benham had an understanding of the barges that could only come from sailing them and talking to their skippers and this depth of knowledge glows on the page.
