Today's students of the painter's craft are rarely fortunate enough to receive instruction in the actual preparation of materials; they are taught in an environment of pre-mixed paints in tubes and pre-primed canvas. The inquisitive student, of whatever age, has difficulty finding an alternative. In this book, the author conducts an introductory study of the craft. He explores the widest spectrum of materials, of traditional oils and watercolours and the ancient and almost forgotten encaustic to the newest synthetics and acrylics, including a full discussion of solvents, thinners, glues, brushes, sprayers and wood panels. He guides the novice in the essentials of technique;selecting and stretching canvas, preparing hardboards for use as grounds, mixing glues, grinding pigment and mixing oil paint, filling paint tubes, making egg tempera and hand-rolling pastel sticks. In each case he stresses the underlying principles of the technique, leaving the creative decisions to the artist and allowing for adjustments in method to suit the individual. The artist's studio itself is scrutinized by the author and suggestions are made for setting up adequate and safe work space.
