Research for The Big Rivers
Before I begin writing and illustrating any book, I spend a great deal of time doing research. First I read a lot about my subject, in this case the rivers. I read both non-fiction and also Mark Twain stories. Then I consult experts in the field, like the Army Corps of Engineers. I found them very helpful. Finally, my favorite research, is visiting the places I will be writing about. For this book I made three trips to the rivers. First I went to the upper Mississippi and visited the source. When the floods came along, I flew to St. Louis and spent time filling sandbags with the other volunteers. The floods were incredible, and it was very important to see them firsthand. The next spring I drove all along the Ohio River and down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. I carry a sketch journal with me at all times and take a lot of photos, too. When I have finished the research, then I begin work on the book. I spent the better part of two years in research, writing, and illustraion for The Big Rivers. I hope you like it.
