John Milton (1608-74) began his literary career writing pamphlets, defending the Presbyterian cause, divorce and lastly the English Revolution. His great poems were written after his political defeat. These include Paradise Lost (1667), Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes (1671).
John Leonard is Professor of English at the University of Western Ontario. He has published widely on Milton and his book Naming in Paradise (Clarendon Press, 1990) was co-winner of a Milton Society Award.
