Synopsis

This health survey presents a number of reports which consider the health of older people, aged 65 years and over, both in private households and, for the first time, in residential and nursing homes. The percentage of the population aged 65 and over is continuing to rise. This age group comprises an estimated 16 per cent of the population in 2001, and this figure is forecast to rise to 21 per cent by 2026. Older people are more likely to have complex health needs and require a full range of primary, community and acute hospital services. This report looks at the issues of: self-assessed general health and longstanding illness; dental health; use of GP and hospital services; and the use of prescribed medicines.
