In recent years, the Social Services Inspectorate has adopted an increasingly structured, systematic approach to the inspection of residential child care services. An important element of this development is the specification in advance of the standards and criteria against which services will be evaluated. This handbook represents a detailed and comprehensive catalogue of these standards and criteria. Criteria are grouped under three main headings: outcomes for children; home practices; and management actions. To date, SSI has inspected residential child care services in 24 local authorities using these standards and criteria.
