About the Author:

The late John M. Leavens, a co-founder and one-time co-secretary of The Catboat Association and editor of its bulletin, learned to sail on the New Jersey shore in the cat-rigged Barnegat Bay sneakbox. A life-long interest in catboats, later evidenced by his 1931 Herbert F. Crosby & Sons catboat Pinkletink, led him to collect pictures of catboats together with written and tape-recorded material about them. The bulletins of The Catboat Association contain many of his articles dealing with the history of the catboat and biographies of such catboat builders as the Crosbys of Osterville, Manuel S. Roberts, W. W. Phinney, Charles Anderson, Merton Long and C. C. Hanley. In addition to serving as editor of this book, he contributed two chapters, "Racing in Catboats" and "A Catboat Bibliography."
