Now in its fourth edition, this leading text has been extensively revised to reflect the sweeping changes the past decade have brought to Europe and to incorporate new research in the field. Employing a richly topical rather than a mechanistic region-by-region approach, the book simultaneously presents the overarching unity of Europe as a human entity and its underlying internal diversity. Inclusive, intellectual, rich in ideas, lively, controversial, humanistic, and above all interesting, The European Culture Area is the text of choice for courses on the geography of Europe. Review:
The fourth edition continues and updates the high standards set by the earlier work. It contains the latest information available on this region of extraordinary dynamism in the last decade of the twentieth century, set within the context of contemporary regional scholarship. This new edition is the only logical choice for a European textbook available for those of us who teach semester-length courses.--Ary J. Lamme III, University of Florida The latest edition of The European Culture Area is one of the best introductory regional geography texts I have seen. Through a thoughtful and effective interweaving of history and geography, the authors provide an insightful portrait of the evolving European scene. Remarkably, maps are no mere afterthought in this book; stories are told in and through maps in a fashion that makes this a truly geographical work.--Alexander B. Murphy, University of Oregon
