Educational consultant Greene presents the results of his survey and personal interviews with undergraduate students in order to help guide parents and prospective students to a realistic assessment of college choice. He explores the academic atmosphere, costs, social life, diversity, use of alcohol and drugs, campus safety, stress, and other issues at 20 of America's elite public and private higher education institutions. From the Author:
THE SELECT brings the voice of students to the public.
The purpose of including statistical data from over 4,000 students is to let the interested student and parent compare the different colleges and to understand the nature of life on elite college campuses today. One can read the study without having to review the charts. The student quotes are very powerful in themselves. I am disappointed with the Kirkus Reviewer who failed to focus on the message of the book, not understanding that this involved a project lends credence to what it is like for the large majority of today's students on competitive college campuses. Did he or she really read the text?
