As well as chapters by individual authors who are experts on their chosen historian, there is a substantial introduction by the editor which serves as the basis for a discussion about the problems involved in the writing of history.

John Cannon was Keeper of Botany at the Natural History Museum, London, until his retirement in 1990. He has botanized and collected in many European countries and has traveled widely in the United States.
