A slipcase containing the CD editions of the first three stories in the Series of Unfortunate Events.

I’m sorry to say that these CDs tell unhappy tales about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings, Violet, Klaus and Sunny lead lives filled with misery and woe.

From the very beginning when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, disaster lurks at their heels, as they encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune and cold porridge for breakfast. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In The Reptile Room the story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don’t be fooled, even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery. The three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible smell, a deadly serpent, a long knife, and the re-appearance of a person they’d hoped never to see again.

And if you haven’t got the stomach for a story that includes a hurricane, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible villain and a doll named Pretty Penny, then The Wide Window will probably fill you with despair.

It is our duty to produce these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from selling something happy and more heartwarming, if you prefer that sort of thing!

Review:

"Written with old-fashioned flair, this fast-paced book is not for the squeamish: the Baudelaire children are truly sympathetic characters who encounter a multitude of distressing situations. Those who enjoy a little poison in their porridge will find it wicked good fun." Kirkus Reviews
