It's wartime London. Inspector Gringall of the Yard, long-time friendly rival of private detective Slim Callaghan, sends Slim on a mission to meet Doria Varette, a torch singer at Ferdie's Place.

Callaghan knows Gringall has something up his sleeve. And when, backstage, Doria asks him to take on a job - to find her boyfriend Lionel Wilbery, a poet with the wrong friends and a drug problem - Callaghan finds Gringall has more than a missing person in his sights.

Book Description:
The master of British noir
About the Author:
Reginald Evelyn Peter Southouse Cheyney was born in Whitechapel in the East End of London. After serving as a lieutenant during the First World War, he worked as a police reporter and freelance investigator until he found success with his first Lemmy Caution novel. In his lifetime Cheyney was a prolific and wildly successful author, selling, in 1946 alone, over 1.5 million copies of his books. His work was also enormously popular in France, and inspired Jean-Luc Godard's character of the same name in his dystopian sci-fi film Alphaville. The master of British noir, in Lemmy Caution Peter Cheyney created the blueprint for the tough-talking, hard-drinking pulp fiction detective.

Book Description Paperback. Condition: Very Good-. Reprint; First Printing. Some reading and cover creases, some shelf and edge wear with split at base of spine, paper toned. ; Nice tight copy, no names inside. ; 240 pages; Beautiful cabaret singers don't usually carry automatics in their handbags. Intelligent brunettes of Slim Callaghan's acquaintance don't usually pretend to be drunk. Foreigners don't usually pay him to mind his own business when he hadn't been doing otherwise. So Callaghan was curious, all the more so as it seemed that his old friend Gringall of Scotland Yard was mixed up in it somehow. Mass Market PB. Seller Inventory # 21258
