1916. Impressionable fifteen-year-old George Ledra is sent away from Manchester to Cornwall for his health. Here he meets Professor of Greek, Hector Chown, his actress neice, Sylvia Bascombe, and her seven-year-old daughter, Janet, living in a derelict house. Little does George realise at the time the significance of the meeting and that he would eventually marry one of them. The story spans the period from the First World War to the beginning of the Second. Like the world, the house is rebuilt, only to relapse into ruin. This is a story of a memorable and diverse group of people experiencing both success and adversity in a time of change and uncertainty.
