Water-Rat was very proud of his boat. “She’s the tightest, trimmest little craft on the river,” he boasted. Of course, he wastes no time in inviting little Grey Rabbit and Squirrel out for a river-picnic, but there’s no room for poor Hare on his boat...
But Hare cannot miss the opportunity for a feast, and decides to run along the bank as the others glide in the boat.
And so, as little Grey Rabbit steers, and Squirrel twirls her sunshade in the bows, the river trip begins.
The water-hens are charming, but the ducks are rough and mischievous and nearly bring the picnic to an end. Water-Rat saves the day by diving for the picnic, and Hare soon catches up to partake in the fare.
Unfortunately, Hare’s curiosity lures him to Rat’s boat, and lands him in the water! This time, though, the naughty ducks redeem themselves by hauling him out. “Atishoo!” sneezed Hare...

Little Grey Rabbit lives with Squirrel and Hare in a little house on the edge of wood. Not too far away lives Water Rat, in his house by the river. One bright, summer's morning Water Rat proudly polishes his boat, the Saucy Nancy. He is planning a surprise for Squirrel and Little Grey Rabbit. How they will love a boat trip down the river and a delectable picnic afterwards! But when Hare hears the idea he is shocked. "Do you mean you are going on a picnic without me?" he cries. "It's impossible!" Poor Squirrel and Grey Rabbit. They just can't go on the wonderful trip without Hare. "I have a plan," says Water Rat. And he does, but it is only the beginning of their adventures.
Alison Uttley was born and brought up on a farm in Derbyshire at the end of the 19th century. Her Little Grey Rabbit series has delighted generations of children. Her love of country life – gathering spring flowers, picnicking in summer meadows and skating on frozen ponds – comes through vividly in her stories.
