1940 inscribed and signed second edition, M.D. Japheth / Mody's Diamond Printing Works (Bombay, India), 5 x 7 3/8 inches tall pale green hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, blue lettering to front cover, [7], 87 pp. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers. 1 1/2 inch edge chip to the bottom edge of the blank front free-endpaper, which is inscribed and signed by the author, Maurice David Japheth (1913-1976). Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a moderately creased, soiled and edgeworn dust jacket which has a half-inch chip to the lower edge of the front cover but which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. M.D. Japheth was the editor of a Jewish monthly publication in Bombay, 'The Jewish Advocate,' and wrote a number of other books, including The Jews of India, A Brief Survey. Japheth, a Baghdadi Jew married to a Bene Israel Jew - a controversy by itself - had met Gandhi in Nagpur in 1935 and was drawn to the Gandhian teaching of a simple life.
