DESCRIPTION: Not dated,[1928-30?] Four volumes, three colour frontispieces and 18 colour plates as well as numerous black and white illustrations. 10x8 inches. Bound in publishers red cloth, with gilt lettering on the cover and spine and blind stamped and pattern. Volume 4 entitled: The stories of the great operas and composers. Written by Ernest Newman. CONDITION: A previous owner's ex-libris label on the front free endpapers of each volume. Mild rubbing to the boards. Top of the spine of Vol 3, has two shallow (less than 3 mm) closed tears. Shelf-wear to some of the lower corners. Strong joints and hinges. Pages are clean and unmarked, with slight age toning to the margins. The contents are most pleasing. The plates are colourful and bright. The pages are mellowed, clean, clear, confident, contented, assured, benevolent. Edited by music critic and musicologist Ernest Newman as well as conductor, composer and pianist, Sir Landon Ronald. In original full cloth bindings. Externally, generally smart with slight rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spines. Further bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spines. Gift inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper to all volumes. Internally, the binding to all volumes are strained in places, particularly to the first and last few pages.
