Dresden, 1753. Very large oblong engraving on strong paper. The death of Seneca; he is seen sitting on the left, with a man crying on his shoulder and another holding his foot above a basin, while on the right a disciple writes down his last words; many other figures surround them. Below image signed in the plate "C. Hutin del. - P. Aveline Sc."; and inscription in Italian and French giving details on the original painting: "Quadro di Luca Giordano, cavato dalla Galleria Reale di Dresda; Alto Piedi 5. Onc: 3. Largo Piedi 8. Onc: 1: - Tableau de Luc: Jordan, de la Gallerie Royale de Dresde; Haut: 5. Pieds 3. Pouc: Larg: 8. Pi: 1. Pouc:". Numbered "No. 38" in lower right corner. In center coat of arms of Dresden Gallery. 38 x 52 cm.*I.F.F. I, 332, No. 102. Nagler I, 197. In database of British Museum. Plate 38 from "Carl Heinrich von Heineken: Recueil d'estampes d'après les plus célèbres tableaux de la Galerie Royale de Dresde", Vol. I., 1753. This plate, one of Pierre Aveline's best works, was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1753 and 1757. Engraved after the painting in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden (see: Ferrari/Scavizzi, Luca Giordano, l'Opera Completa, 1992, cat. No. A647). Seneca the Younger (4 BC?-65 AD), Roman philosopher and dramatist, advisor to Nero, was accused of taking part in the Pisonian conspiracy to assassinate Nero, he was ordered to commit suicide, which he did by opening his veins and bleeding to death. - Very ample margins, small tear in lower blank margin; very lightly foxed.
