8vo, [8], iv, 331, xxix pp, contemporary brown sheep with spine in six compartments, gilt and morocco spine label. A religious work by Thomas Blackwell, a Minister of the Church of Scotland, published in Lancaster, Pennsylvania at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The last 29 pages print a subscribers list of who the book was sent to, featuring prominent Scots in the American colonies, including a number of North Carolina residents; this book belonged to John Hanner, a prominent citizen of Greensboro, North Carolina, and is inscribed by him several times on the front endpapers. There is also a several line inscriptions noting that the book was given to John Hanner by Colonel William Gillespie, father of John's wife Anne. According to the Greensboro History Museum, "John Hanner, born on October 4, 1777, was the son of Robert and Isabella Erwin Hanner. On September 4, 1801, he married Anne Gillespie (1780-1858), daughter of Colonel John and Elizabeth Armstrong Gillespie. The Hanners had a total of twelve children: Pleasant and an unnamed child died very young, Emsley survived only two years until 1804, and Melinda died in 1826 at age 17, but all the other children survived to adulthood. The Hanners lived on an 800-acre tract three miles southeast of Greensboro. Hanner farmed and by 1830 owned six slaves."
