About this Item
Octavo, brown paper-covered boards and red cloth spine lettered in gilt; publisher's slipcase. First edition. One of 500 copies designed by Joseph Blumenthal and printed at The Spiral Press. Four photographs; woodcuts designed by Thomas W. Nason; laid in is a hand-written note from Adams: "To the most ardent travelers I know - from a fellow traveler and old friend - with affectionate greetings, Fred." --- From the library of Milton C. Rose, with the patron of the arts and prominent attorney's bookplate on the front pastedown. Rose (1904-2002), a onetime law partner of Richard Nixon and John N. Mitchell in the firm Nixon Mudge Rose Alexander & Mitchell, was instrumental in bringing Nixon into the firm in 1963 after he had lost the election for governor of California. Rose's collection of art was donated to the Cleveland Art Institute and to the Williams College Art Museum, which has a room bearing his name. A fascinating work with a most distinguished provenance.
